6 Tips to Organize and Clean Your Home the Right Way

Have you ever walked into your home and felt overwhelmed by the mess? If so, it’s time to get organized! We understand it can be difficult to have a set cleaning schedule, especially for those who are busy with work and family.

So, to help you get your home in order without spending too much time or money, here are six tips for organizing and cleaning your house!

Cleaning – Pick One Chore and Stick to It

Doing a single chore throughout your entire household is efficient and effective. Instead of multitasking or just doing a little bit of everything, choose one chore to do thoroughly before moving on.

For example, you may decide to pick up your broom and sweep the entire house before moving on to another task. By allowing yourself to concentrate fully on one chore, you’ll have better focus and as a result get the job done better and faster. Afterward, you can proceed to do the vacuuming since that would be the natural next step.

If, however, you need a deep clean in a short period of time i.e. for last minute guests, hiring reputable cleaners like Calibre Cleaning is a fantastic last minute solution.

Clean Your Mirrors Using Vinegar and Microfibre Cloths

To clean your mirrors simply apply water and vinegar with a microfibre cloth. Not only will this help to remove any grime from the surface of your mirror, but it also leaves behind no streaks!

Like other glass or reflective surfaces, you’ll be surprised at what’s needed to clean them. Instead of wasting time purchasing glass cleaners, simply having alcohol, water, vinegar and a dry cloth in your household are enough to get the job done. In addition to these products being cheaper, they’re also natural alternatives that are eco-friendly.

When cleaning your mirrors, avoid wiping in a circular motion if possible, as this is a good way for dust to return back to the same spot. Instead, start from one corner and wipe in a straight line to the opposite side until you’ve reached the edge or other end.

Use Baking Soda to Clean Your Couch

Whether your couch is leather, fabric or suede it can be hard to clean. In fact, many people avoid cleaning their couches altogether because of the difficulty in doing so. However, all you’ll actually need is some baking soda to get the job done.

Begin by vacuuming your couch to remove as much dirt and debris as possible. Then, take a spoonful of baking soda and spread it over the fabric of your couch, using a soft brush to brush the powder into the surface – proceed to let it rest for 1 hour.

Once the baking soda has had time to work its magic, it’s safe to use vacuum to remove all residue remaining. Baking works wonders to remove lingering odours and smells from your couch, due to its absorbing qualities.

Prioritise Mould and Mildew Removal

If you’ve ever tried to clean away mould or mildew, then you know how difficult it can be. Not only are these stains difficult to remove but they also leave behind a stale and pungent smell.

Moud is not only an eyesore, but it can have ramifications to your health if left unattended too overtime.  Moulds produce allergens which can cause a range of respiratory problems including asthma, allergies and lung infections. In addition to the health risks it poses for you, mould is also dangerous to your pets as well if ingested.

If you notice that there’s an accumulation of black or dark spots on any part of your home then this could be a sign that moud has taken over. Once you’ve determined that you have mould, make a solution of 10 parts water and 1 part bleach and apply it on a sponge. Wipe down the area until mould is no longer present.

Organizing – Don’t be Afraid to Donate Your Things

You may love your old clothes, shoes, and other items that no longer fit you. However if they’re just taking up space in your home it’s time to get rid of them! If the idea of throwing out or donating things makes you nervous then fear not, as some thrift stores may be willing to pay you for your items!

Donations don’t have to be exclusive to the adults in your household, but also your kids. From old toys they stopped playing with to clothes they’ve outgrown, you can get rid of these things to make room for new ones.

Try the Konmari Method

The Marie Kondo method of decluttering may have changed your life. If not, however, it’s time to learn! This organizing method has become popular for a reason, as it can be used for more than just clothes. Along with clothing the Konmari method can be applied to other items throughout your home, even old books or knick knacks you have lying around!

According to Kondo, it’s important to divide your belongings into five categories, which include:

  1. Clothing
  2. Books
  3. Paper
  4. Misc
  5. Mementos

And within these categories are subcategories each labeled by a single word. For example, under clothing you may have “shirts,” “pants,” etcetera. Grouping your possessions is important because it helps you see what you have and can help with finding things much faster.
