Can You Seriously Apply Sunscreen As Your Makeup Base?

It has been estimated that skin cancer incidence has risen by 15 times more compared to the number of cases recorded in the 1970s. The World Health Organization, mean time, has also estimated that 300,000 more people will become affected by skin cancers for every 10 per cent destruction in the ozone layer. Taking these into consideration, there is every reason for you to act on your sun care, not just for vanity but, more importantly for your health’s sake.

 Sunscreen And Your Makeup

People give different excuses not to put on sunscreen when they intend to put on foundation. If you’re one of them, here are some facts that you must know:

1. You should not have to choose between your sunscreen and your makeup.

Those two products do very different things — one to protect, the other to enhance your physical features but, both work together to give you beautiful skin now and in the future.

2. Several products now combine both functions.

Several products have been successful in merging sunscreen and foundation. Some manufacturers call their products tinted sunscreens, others term theirs as foundation with SPF protection, while others have made more multifunctional products like BB creams.  A BB cream normally, will merge four functions, that is, concealer, moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen.

3. Applying SPF infused cosmetics still requires you to apply a sunscreen product.

Many cosmetics  manufacturers would expressly make that recommendation on the labels.  For the sake of your skin, it’s always best to layer both products on top of each other. Most cosmetics will carry an SPF 15. For your stand alone sunscreen, make sure to get a broad spectrum SPF 30 or more variety.

4. Many sunscreen products are formulated to be layered under your makeup.

The best sunscreens that you can get that doubles up as a primer are those that give you “lightweight coverage” “oil control” or “mattifying” function. This is important when you want to keep your makeup in place and not slip off of your face. That’s because a lot of sunscreens can be too thick on your skin. As the hours pass, these thick sunscreens are guaranteed to make your skin become greasy.

To layer properly, put on your sheer sunscreen first. With a mattifying function, you should get a perfect primer too for your make up to glide and cling on. Then, layer your makeup on top of your sunscreen.

5. Even with your sunscreen layered under your makeup, reapplication remains necessary.

Sunscreen loses its potency, usually beyond two hours. To keep protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV, you need to reapply your sunscreen. The biggest issue for women who wear makeup is, how do you get that done when you have makeup on?

As of the moment, the options are limited. We suggest making good use of your SPF infused makeup to do that. Another option would be to get a spray on sunscreen that you can keep take with you and use that to reapply your sunscreen.

6. Wearing sunscreen with your makeup gives you more benefits than sun protection.

The other great benefit that you can get from the best sunscreen for body and best sunscreens for face are antioxidants. Studies have shown that, other than neutralizing cell-damaging free radicals, antioxidants also provide an added layer of protection to keep damaging UV off of your skin. Vitamins, skin lightening ingredients and barrier forming components are other benefits that you can derive from a well-formulated sunscreen.

7. Sunscreen can also serve to protect and prime other sun exposed areas of your face and body.

That includes your lips, neck, chest and the back of your hands. Don’t forget to do to your neck and exposed areas of your chest what you do to your face so that you achieve even toned skin with your makeup. In which case, sunscreen can also serve as a primer to prep these areas to receive  corrective, anti-aging makeup.

 Conclusion

Even though a sunscreen can provide you with effective sun care, you have to believe what Brooke Burke once said about sunscreen, and that is, “I just don’t think there’s a sunscreen that gives you enough protection”. So, keep putting on your hat, wear your sunglasses, use clothing as a form of UV protection, and minimize your sun time.
